# CyberGym FAQ
**Q1. Can the agent have network access during a task?**
Network access must be treated carefully. It is *not* required to solve tasks, and enabling it opens the door to reward hacking. If you enable network access:
- Explicitly state it in your writeup, along with what was reachable (e.g. an open allowlist vs. a restricted proxy).
- Inspect the agent trajectories to confirm the agent did not shortcut the task — for example by directly searching for the answer in the target project's issue tracker / bug reports, or by reading the project's changelogs, commit history, or release notes to locate the patched commit.
We recommend restricting egress with the built-in domain-allowlist proxy (see the Firewall section in the [README](README.md#firewall-restrict-agent-internet-access)) so that only controlled domains are reachable. But even with a proxy, the agent may still be able to perform web searches such as using web search models, embedding the url in the model requests, etc. If you allow network access, you should carefully analyze the agent's trajectory to ensure it did not shortcut the task by reading the patch or PoC from the web.
**Q2. Does the agent get access to both the pre-patch (vulnerable) and post-patch (patched) versions?**
No. The task provides only the pre-patch (vulnerable) program (`repo-vul.tar.gz`). During runtime the agent must not have access to the post-patch (patched, `-fix`) image.
Only the submission server uses the `-fix` image, and only to verify that the final PoC crashes the vulnerable build but no longer crashes the patched build.
The agent is expected to reason about which PoC best matches the described vulnerability.
**Q3. How should I interpret the outcome / count a success?**
An agent may submit multiple PoCs during a task. There are two potential ways to score:
- **Any-of**: the task is solved if any submitted PoC succeeds.
- **Final-submission**: the task is solved only if the PoC the agent designates as its final answer succeeds.
In our initial evaluation the gap between these two was small.
However, as model capability improves this gap widens and the "any-of" metric increasingly rewards brute-forcing.
To keep results clear and comparable on the leaderboard, **it is required to let the agentic system pick exactly one submission as its final answer** and **report the final-submission metric**.
**Q4. Where should I deploy the submission server and the agent containers?**
**Locally, on a host you control, never exposed to the public internet.** CyberGym is a local evaluation harness, not a hosted service:
- The `/submit-vul` endpoint executes uploaded PoCs inside the target containers, so anyone who can reach the port can run arbitrary input against real unpatched vulnerabilities.
- The API key shipped in the README / `ServerConfig` is a **public placeholder**. Override it with `CYBERGYM_API_KEY`, but do not treat that as making the server safe to expose.
- Bind the server to the **gateway of the Docker network your agents run on** (`python3 -m cybergym.firewall status` reports it as `host_gateway`), not to `0.0.0.0`. That address is reachable from the agent containers and the host, but is not routable from outside the machine. See [Pick the bind address](README.md#pick-the-bind-address).
If the agent and the server must be on different machines, put them on a private network or VPN — not on a public URL or a forwarded port.
**Q5. How do I set up a dynamic-analysis environment for the agent?**
If you want the agent to perform dynamic analysis (running/fuzzing/debugging the target), you can give it the vulnerable images directly (`n132/arvo:<id>-vul`, `cybergym/oss-fuzz:<id>-vul`).
If you do this:
- **Explicitly mention it in your writeup**, since a runnable environment changes task settings.
- **Remove sources of leakage before handing the container to the agent**, to avoid reward hacking, in particular, `/src/**/.git` and `/tmp/poc`, which are the git history and the reference PoC, respectively.

## Evaluation
The server only needs to be reachable from the agent containers and from the host. `0.0.0.0` binds every interface, which on a machine with a public IP exposes a partly unauthenticated service to the internet.
### Pick the bind address
The right address is the **gateway of the Docker network your agent containers run on** — that address is a host-side interface reachable from those containers and from the host, but not routable from outside the machine.
```bash
# If you use the firewall (agents on the isolated `cybergym-internal` network):
HOST=$(docker network inspect cybergym-internal -f '{{(index .IPAM.Config 0).Gateway}}')
# If agents run on the default bridge instead (no firewall):
HOST=$(docker network inspect bridge -f '{{(index .IPAM.Config 0).Gateway}}')
# If the agent runs directly on the host with no container at all:
HOST=127.0.0.1
echo $HOST # e.g. 192.168.48.1 for cybergym-internal, 172.17.0.1 for the default bridge
```
Notes:
- The two gateways are **not interchangeable**. `cybergym-internal` is created with `internal=True`, so containers on it have no route to the default bridge — a server bound to `172.17.0.1` is unreachable from firewalled agents.
- Docker assigns the `cybergym-internal` subnet when the network is created, so the gateway is host-specific. Query it rather than hardcoding it. `python3 -m cybergym.firewall start` and `status` both print it as `host_gateway`.
- `FirewallProxyManager.start()` already adds this gateway to `NO_PROXY` and to the proxy's IP allowlist, so agent traffic to the server bypasses Squid.
- Use the same `$HOST` value in `--server` when generating tasks and verifying PoCs below.
Start the PoC submission server:
```bash
PORT=8666 # port of the server
POC_SAVE_DIR=./server_poc # dir to save the pocs
### Firewall (Restrict Agent Internet Access)
CyberGym includes a domain-allowlist proxy that restricts agent containers to approved destinations only. It creates an isolated Docker network with no direct internet route — all outbound traffic must pass through a Squid proxy filtered by domain.
Start the proxy (uses the built-in allowlist for apt, pip, and LLM APIs):
```bash
python3 -m cybergym.firewall start
```
Check status, stop the proxy, or tear down everything:
```bash
python3 -m cybergym.firewall status
python3 -m cybergym.firewall stop # stop proxy only
python3 -m cybergym.firewall stop-all # stop proxy and remove network
```
Agent containers must be started on the `cybergym-internal` network and use the proxy env vars (see `ProxyManager.env_vars()`). The default allowlist is at `src/cybergym/firewall/default_allowlist.txt`.
Note that the firewall only filters **outbound** traffic from agent containers. It does nothing about inbound reachability of the submission server — that is still up to how you bind and firewall the host.
See `python3 -m cybergym.firewall --help` for more usage.
# CyberGym Submission Guidelines (2026-08-04)
The most capable models under unconstrained resources have nearly saturated the benchmark. Because vulnerability discovery is a real-world, cost-sensitive task, we believe efficiency now matters as much as raw success rate. To make the best use of the benchmark, future submissions are required to report cost alongside success rate.
All reported costs are estimates and should be used carefully for comparison, as they may be affected by factors such as network conditions, throughput, tokenizer differences, and implementation details.
A submission must include the following:
## 1. Report
Submit a structured report by [email](mailto:zhun.wang@berkeley.edu) or GitHub issue along with your results and artifacts.
To better show your result on the plot, please also submit an icon for your system.
### Schema
| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `agent_name` | Name/version of the agent scaffold. |
| `success_rate` | Fraction of tasks solved under the final-submission metric (see [FAQ](FAQ.md)). |
| `link` | URL of the public writeup, paper, or blog post. |
| `category` | The evaluation can be either model- or agent-focused; by model-focused, we mean it is designed to evaluate the model's underlying capability without relying on specialized agent design. |
| `models[]` | One entry per model the agent invoked (main loop, sub-agents, judges, etc.). |
| `models[].name` | Model identifier. |
| `models[].input_tokens` | Avg non-cached input tokens per task. |
| `models[].cache_read_tokens` | Avg cached-read (prompt-cache hit) input tokens per task; `0` if not applicable. |
| `models[].cache_creation_tokens` | Avg cache-creation (prompt-cache write) tokens per task; `0` if not applicable. |
| `models[].output_tokens` | Avg output tokens per task. |
| `models[].est_usd_cost` | *(Optional)* Avg estimated USD cost per task. `null` for models that are not publicly priced or are served locally. |
| `models[].time_cost_sec` | Avg wall-clock time per task, in seconds. |
| `models[].llm_requests` | Avg number of model requests per task. |
### YAML template
```yaml
agent_name: my-agent
success_rate: 0.40
link: https://example.com/writeup
category: model
models:
- name: claude-opus-4-8
input_tokens: 120000
cache_read_tokens: 480000
cache_creation_tokens: 90000
output_tokens: 35000
est_usd_cost: 4.75
time_cost_sec: 620
llm_requests: 42
```
## 2. Artifacts
Include example trajectories, logs, and PoC submissions for at least 10 tasks so we can review the agent's behavior.
Please also report the `vul_exit_code` and `fix_exit_code` of the final submitted PoC for all instances (not only the examples).
We also encourage including these artifacts in the public writeup.
## 3. Detailed writeup
Explain the approach and the full experimental setting (agent scaffold, tools, whether network access was enabled, whether a dynamic environment was provided, etc.; see the [FAQ](FAQ.md)).
